A guide to clubs in Murcia City, Spain (Supplemental)

By: Russell Marsh

An Additional "rough" guide to bars in the City of Murcia.

Going out to bars in Murcia is great fun if you're British.

If you like you can do the 'Brit' thing (Go out at 6.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. The best bars in Murcia don't really get going until around 12.00a.m. so you'll miss out on most of the amosphere if that's the way you choose to go.

Here's a tip: To do justice to your evening in Murcia City change your body timer to a Spanish night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 11pm. Before that, if you want to be around the place why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (next to the Cathedral) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from there. You could thenwalk to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a liqueur in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the few places in Murcia where the old Arab walls can still be seen.

This is article two in this series. Here 's some more of some of the best bars in Murcia City.

DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) This place says it's the only true club in Murcia city centre. Located in the busy university area. This is a really busy spot during term time. DNC plays house music and standard pop against a backdrop of trendy décor. Free drink with your admission.

Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente Álamo.) Unusually for pubs in Murcia this is a Western themed pub with

cowboy outfits and saloon-style bars. It's actually a cracking night out if you're in the mood for a knees up!!.

Sala Fluid (Orilla de Azarbe.) Another techno-house place that's open until around 6am. Good idea to get some strong coffee

before going in if you want to get through the night. Brilliant array of cocktails available, but take it easy or the legs may not stand the pace..

Royal Palace (17 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Open till 4am. This vast place is part of a complex that can

hold up to 2,000 bodies. the music is aimed at thirty somethings but of course, Latino rhythms dominate.

La Codiga (Gran Vía Alfonso X ) More of a Spanish bar this. Latin rhythms abound in this club.

Leather trousers and chest wigs are optional ;-)

Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) This probably the most popular bar in Murcia City, playing

Dance and seventies disco. There are 3 rooms with different styles that accommodate most types. Fridays and Saturdays are from 2am-6.30am. (See what I mean about coming out later?)

Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Bouncing bar that is famous for miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. hurts my

head..) . Popular venue for people on stag and hen parties in fancy dress at weekend.

Sala Univesal (1 Avenida Juan Carlos.)A blatant and lively bar - a famous bar in Murcia. There are several rooms playing

different sounds so something for everyone here...

La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Martín de Porres.) Bar with a relaxed atmosphere which offers live jazz and/or rock music from local groups. Also features really good exhibitions of art on the walls.

El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) You're struggling to escape from techno music in Spanish clubs and El Mentidero is no different to the rest. It's a fun bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's adjacent to the

University.

Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) A city centre pub for the young crowd. The sounds range from

Blues to Rock to Jazz. Stays open until 3am.

Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Just a short way outside the city, Super 8 is an cool

bar/club which features a live band each week. The clientelle is mainly a youngish, mainly indie type bunch and opens from 12.30am-6.30am
Utopia (7 Velázquez.) This is an unusual place and is described by the owners as a bar-theatre. The interesting décor imitates theatrical scenery. Utopia has a large variety of acts on stage ranging from musicians, small bands, to actors reading monologues. After the live stuff it's mainly rock, blues and Britpop music.

Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Nearly all the clubs in Murcia are on the outskirts due to noise considerations. Kallejon is no exception. There are two dance floors where you can hear music ranging from Spanish pop to commercial techno

rubbish (only my opinion). It only opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights ('tillate).

Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is near to the Roman Theatre. Here we have live music and sometimes features comedians on stage. It's well worth a visit.

That just about covers it for article two on bars in Murcia City. There's plenty to be going on with anyway.. Should you go to any other Murcia clubs that you think should be mentioned then get in touch and let me have the lowdown. Cheers!!
