A guide to bars in Murcia City (Edition 1)

By: Russell Marsh

A general guide to bars in Murcia.

Going for a drink in Murcia is great fun if you're British. Whilst you can still go out the old fashioned English way (Go out at 8.00p.m. and be back home by 12.00 the worse for
wear) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. The best bars in Murcia City don't really get going until around 1.00a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if you're in bed too early.

Here's a good tip: To do justice to your evening in Murcia City change your body timer to a Murcian night out by simply changing your watch by a couple of hours. Don't consider going to a "proper" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Before that, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from there. Then you could amble down to the Hotel Rincon de pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a snifter in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the few places in Murcia where you can see Murcia's original Arab Walls.

Here's a few of some of the bars in Murcia City.

El Albergue (19 Calle Vara de Rey.) Opens until 3, serves cocktails and has real music on Tuesdays. Youngersters love it and it gets packed at weekends.

Itaca (7 Calle Mariano Vergara. Tel. 968 934 922) Near the Uni. Quite an unusual bar in that it's both bar and a bookshop. You'll meet lots of local students having coffee during the day, the mood then changes in the evening as a more mature crowd come in to blast away at the cocktails. Mojitos are the most popular drink.

Guanábana Jam (6 Plaza Cerámica.) A new club with bars &stage primarilly showing Blues, Soul and live Jazz. On Tues & Wed it's open till 1.00, while Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays carry on later till 3 or so..

Mestizo (14 Doctor Fleming.) Chilled-out café during the day but at night it turns into a lively pub. Buzzing atmosphere later as opposed to chilled out earlier..

Icaro (Plaza Beato A Hibermón.) Situated near Murcia University, in an area which is a lively student scene during term time. Again Icaro is a good place for an early evening drink.

Zanzibar (3 Calle Andres Baquero.) This is a small bustling small bar where you can get just about every kind of drink you could ask for. Inside you'll find people relaxing with anything from a milkshake to a cocktail. Happy hour is on Wednesdays from 9-11pm where the old two for one applies.

Josepe (9 Arquitecto Emilio Piñero.) A nice tapas bar that stays open all day long. They have historic paintings and photographs of Murcia around the place. You could try a sherry and pan con tomate in the early evening for a change before your meal. This is usually one of the first bars in Murcia I call in..

B12 (17 Calle Trinidade.) A trendy bar but fairly quiet early on in the evening. Start your night here with a quiet drink.

La Bulla (Calle Montijo.) One of a few Cuban bars specialisiing in Cocktails. Stays open till 3.30.

Drexco (26 Trapería.) Nice place near the Cathedral for coffee and non-alcoholic drinks. Probably the biggest variety of coffee in Murcia City with beans from all over the planet. It's open till 1am, playing relaxed music.

Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel.) A traditional tapas bar near the cathedral in the heart of the City. If you order a sherry here they'll think you're a local.

El Bolo (29 Calle Vara del Rey.) Well chilled bar in the Old Town right in the party area. There are live gigs on Tuesday nights and also cocktail features on Fridays and Saturdays. A decent place to start the night, then return for a drink later chill out.

That just about covers it for the first installment of bars in Murcia City. There's plenty to be going on with anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia bars that you think deserve a mention then get in touch and let me have details. Cheers!!
